The entomological collections of the Lund University are very large and of great international significance. The collection was founded already in 1735 when the first donation to the University was made by Kilian Stobaeus, the first teacher of Carl Linnaeus. Since then, the collection has grown through donations of private collections to the University, through contributions by various scientists active within the University and as a result of large scale scientific expeditions to various parts of the world organized by the University (South Africa 1951-52, Sri Lanka 1962, Senegambia 1977 etc.). The number of dry-mounted specimens is estimated to be somewhere between 10 to 20 million.
