The lichen collection is growing comparatively fast, depending both on a
high activity among our own lichenologists and a comprehensive exchange
with colleagues in different parts of the world. The first collections
were made as early as in the beginning of the 19th century and the
herbarium has continuously expanded to include approximately 170 000
specimens. It is divided into one Nordic and one extra-Nordic part
composed of c. 70 000 and 100 000 specimens, respectively. Southern
Sweden is particularly well represented through Ove Almborn's
phytogeographical investigations in the 1930s and 1940s. Important
material has also been collected in southern Africa by Almborn and
Kärnefelt.
The collection is presently being registered and
updated following current taxonomy. The families Parmeliaceae and
Teloschistaceae and the genus Ramalina are examples of revised groups in
the Nordic collection, now available in our database. A DNA collection,
composed of about 800 extractions, is furthermore present with emphasis
on Parmeliaceae.
